We support restrained and responsible governance with proper attention to real student issues and practical solutions.
The SRL team would work to make the SLFS more accessible and accountable to students through a variety of means including:
-A commitment to hosting “SLFS Open Call” workshops for UBC Students once every term. These workshops will be geared towards soliciting potential systemic academic and/or administrative issues and identifying barriers that UBC student may be facing
-A commitment towards looking at initiating test case litigation for potential cases/issues such as the process for Freedom of Information requests at UBC.
-The SRL slate will also be committed to holding more Know Your Rights workshops for students with an emphasis on student academic rights, a program which SRL kick started last year.  We would like to build stronger ties with the UBC Ombuds office to help with making these workshops relevant to students.
-We will look to consult with students about expanding the mandate of the society
It is important to note that the SLFS is not a legal aid society which is a common misconception; the society’s mandate is to improve education and access to education at UBC and other such matters of law which set broad precedent for UBC students and so it is important to ensure the resource is there when it’s needed.
Safeguarding student rights are important, and the society is in place to do just that- SRL will ensure that it is not allocated towards impractical pet projects, and accessible to every single student regardless of what faculty or financial background they are from.
The SRL team looks forward to serving the needs of students!
